Welcome

Welcome to the Sleep Medicine Resource site
We are here to give professionals and the public in South Africa access to information, education and resources in the arena of Sleep Medicine and Sleep Disorders. Our goals are as follows:

  • To enhance public awareness about sleep medicine and sleep disorders;
  • To inform on the contribution that sleep disorders play in public occupational health and safety;
  • To educate the public to recognise the signs and symptoms of sleep disorders and assist them in seeking effective treatment for them
  • To keep the public abreast of new developments in research into sleep disorders
  • To enable the translation of new sleep-related discoveries into benefits that will optimise public health and the treatment of people with sleep disorders.
  • To provide access to early diagnosis and treatment of Sleep Disorders through web-based access to Sleep Centres in South Africa.

Sleep occupies approximately a third of our lives, but many people cannot get the good night’s sleep that they need. In the UK, sleep disorders affect about 770,000 people and in the USA approximately 5 million people suffer with sleep disorders. The International Classification of Sleep Disorders (ICSD) lists more than eighty four unique sleep disorders. These range from the common types such as Insomnia and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA), to the rare syndrome of Narcolepsy.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine estimates that 10% of the World’s population has a diagnosable sleep disorder. Sleep disorders are usually effectively treatable but due to a lack of education and training, recognition of these disorders by medical professionals is still very low. Sleep Medicine is at an early stage of development in South Africa. We are here to help promote a better understanding of the impact that these problems have on people’s lives and assist those people with sleep disorders in their quest to seek help and effective treatment.
